Relationship Based Behavior

by Matthew Carter  - March 27, 2022

Domesticated animals like dogs, cats and horses are not robots that we can program to always obey our every command. Nor are they completely independent wild animals we can’t control.

Instead, the behavior of our companion animals is based on their relationships with us and their environments. The relationship we have with our pet is more important for shaping their behaviors than anything else in their life except for their innate biology.

Your communication with your pup and her environment, including how she interprets them, help form the basis of her relationship with you and guide her behaviors. This is very similar to what psychologists and counselors refer to in human relationships as having a secure attachment.
